CPR and ECA Classification of Coaxial Cables: What You Need to Know

Europe has introduced new categories for the fire safety of cables under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) of 2011. This requires a new assessment of fire safety in buildings. Cables are now classified into seven classes based on their flame spread and heat release. The introduction and supply of these CPR cables has been gradual, with full compliance with the new regulations from 1 July 2017.

CPR Performance Classes

Cables are classified into the following seven Euroclasses:

  • Aca : No contribution to fire
  • B1ca : Very limited contribution to fire
  • B2ca : Limited contribution to fire
  • Cca : Moderate contribution to fire
  • Dca : Acceptable contribution to fire
  • Eca : Minimum contribution to fire
  • Fca : Contribution to complete fire
Availability and use

From 1 March 2017, the first cables with fire class Eca were available for use in buildings with a low fire risk. Shortly afterwards, cables for buildings with medium (Dca), high (Cca) and very high (B2ca) fire risk followed.

Additional classifications

In addition to the primary fire classifications, three additional classification levels have been defined:

  1. Smoke development (s)
  2. Burning droplets/particles (d)
  3. Acidity of the smoke (a)

These additional classifications apply to cables in classes B1ca to Dca.

Product certification on coaxial cables

Certification of reliable cables of classes Eca and higher is carried out by Notified Bodies under EU product certification. The requirements vary depending on the fire performance: the higher the CPR class, the stricter the requirements.

Dutch standards for coaxial cables

In the Netherlands, the European requirements have been translated into the new NEN8012 standard. This standard limits the fire classifications to four categories:

  • Low fire risk : Eca
  • Medium fire risk : Dca-s3,d2,a3
  • High fire risk : Cca-s1,d1,a1
  • Very high fire risk : B2ca-s1,d1,a1

The CPR classification provides a structured approach to assessing the fire safety of cables in buildings, improving both the safety and reliability of installations. It is essential to select the correct cables based on the specific fire risk of the building in which they are installed.
