The NanoVNA is a portable Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) with a compact design, originally designed by edy555. This affordable yet powerful VNA, equipped with an LCD display, is powered by a 3.7V Li-ion battery and offers excellent performance within its price range.

Since its introduction in 2019, the NanoVNA has become the most popular VNA and antenna analyzer project among hobbyists. The firmware and hardware are maintained by edy555 on GitHub, where he continually pushes out updates, including extensions for harmonics. A well-made NanoVNA can achieve a dynamic range of 40dB at 900MHz.

Online community

Thanks to community collaboration, the improved NanoVNA-H rev3.4 (and later versions) and NanoVNA-H4 can achieve a dynamic range of 40dB up to 1.5GHz. With the excellent performance of the NanoVNA-H rev3.4, edy555 has increased the frequency limit to 2.7GHz in its 0.7.0 firmware. However, please note that above 1.5GHz there may be a significant noise floor and other uncertainties.

TDR functionality

Cho45 has added Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) functionality to the NanoVNA, which allows for quick measurement of coaxial cable lengths and detection of cable faults by calculating impedance discontinuities.

Hugen has improved the original design of Edy555 with two extensions:

  1. More Stable Battery Power: NanoVNA's SA612A mixer requires a stable 5V power supply. The original Edy555 design could not be stably powered by a 3.7V Li-ion battery and required an external USB power supply. Hugen's NanoVNA-H solved this with a 5V DC-DC boost converter, which allows stable operation with only a 3.7V Li-ion battery.

  2. Extended frequency range: The original NanoVNA design operated from 50kHz to 300MHz. Hugen's design extended the measurement frequency range to 900MHz by utilizing harmonics from the internal frequency synthesizer.
